The rich shade of plum is one of those colors that works wonders for everyone. From lids to lips, we saw this vibrant hue make its way onto several runways this season. But, before you go out and buy just about every purple-toned palette you lay eyes on, there are rules that go along with rocking this ravishing tint the right way.

Plum Pout

While we love classic red, corals and even orange, a perfectly plum pout screams sophistication. Go for a morning-appropriate look by swiping on a deep shade of plum and leave the rest of your makeup on the natural side, or go for bold and add some warmth to your cheeks with light contouring and a simple smoky eye for the perfect nighttime look. Day or night, this shade is sure to make a statement!

If your skin tone is on the fair-to-light side, opt in for a sheer shade like Mac Plum Matte Lipstick in 4Eva instead, so that the contrast isn’t too drastic against your milky skin tone. For olive-to-dark skin tones, a more daring hue like Urban Decay Vice Lipstick in Speedball or Venom or YSL Rouge Volupté Perle in Brazen Plum works well against your naturally tan or deep complexion.

Sweet Shadow

Go for a hint of color by wearing a neutral-brown shadow with plum in the crease or as the outer V of your daytime smoky eye. But, if Fearless is your middle name, a bright smoky eye with plum as your main focus could be the way to go! Whatever your level of enthusiasm is, just be sure to rock this bold eye shadow with a neutral lip or you could go plum overload!

Mod Cheeks

When you think flushed cheeks, you probably picture rosy hues of pink and peach. For days when you’re feeling a little less girly and a little more edgy, try a plum-colored blush for a modern approach to facial sculpting — think slim and sophisticated! Using a fluffy powder brush or fan brush, swipe the shade from the outer corner of your cheekbone and move in to the hollows of your cheeks to add a pop of warmth to your overall look!
